What to Do After Finding Proof of Cheating

Relationships · 5 min read

You went looking for an answer and you got one, and it's not the one you wanted. Whatever you found, the next few hours and days matter more than the confrontation itself. Here's how to move through this without making it worse for yourself.

Before you say anything

You're allowed to feel however you feel

Numb, furious, oddly calm, all of it is a normal response to a shock like this. There's no correct way to feel right after finding out, and you don't owe anyone, including him, a composed reaction on a timeline that isn't yours.

The confrontation itself

Lead with what you found, specifically, not with accusations built on assumption. 'I saw this, explain it to me' is harder to talk around than a vague 'I know you're cheating.' Watch how he responds as much as what he says, defensiveness, minimizing, or turning it back on you are all information in themselves. How to confront a partner about Instagram behavior goes further into how to structure that conversation.

You don't have to decide everything at once

You don't need to know tonight whether this is a breakup or something you work through. Give yourself room to just get through the conversation first. Whatever you decide, it doesn't have to be permanent tonight, and it doesn't have to be decided under pressure from him either.

If you decide to stay

Staying isn't weakness and it isn't automatically a mistake, but it does mean the work of actually rebuilding something, not just moving past it silently. How to build trust after snooping covers what that rebuilding process realistically looks like from here.
